Behind a modest weathered gate in a peaceful vineyard grow vines that are held in the highest regard by the world’s leading wine connoisseurs. It is here, in this remarkable parcel, that a chapter in the history of Maison Langlois’ exceptional wines is being written…
The Saumur-Champigny vineyard
The Latin name ‘Champigny’, meaning ‘field of fire’ (campus ignis), takes on a whole new meaning when paired with the beautiful city of Saumur. The Appellation d’Origine Protégée Saumur-Champigny has for decades been synonymous with exceptional Loire Valley red wines.
Here, Langlois cultivates, with great care and attention, 11 hectares of vineyards, of which 9.5 hectares are given over to Cabernet Franc. To bring out the unique character of this iconic Loire Valley grape, our winegrowers pay the closest possible attention to every detail, from controlled natural sodding and mechanical under-vine and inter-row work to disbudding, leaf-thinning, cluster-thinning, where required, and hand-harvesting into crates on part of the vineyard, resulting in yields of 35 to 55 hectolitres per hectare.
The varied terroirs cultivated by Maison Langlois in Saumur-Champigny embody the multiple, precious aromatic facets of its wines: the calcareous sands and marls of the Poyeux, the sandy-clayey glauconitic micaceous soils of the Upper Turonian in the Beaugrands, and the chalky sandy silty glauconitic micaceous soils of the Bourg.
